Meditation is much more than a buzzword in alternative lifestyle circles.
The benefits of meditation are real and documented.
I’ve personally been practicing Transcendental Meditation since
last April and have reaped the benefits in my personal and professional
life. Don’t believe me? Consider the success of people like Oprah Winfrey, Jerry Seinfeld and David Lynch who practice it.
Transcendental Meditation is a silent form of meditation that's
practiced with your eyes closed for 15 to 20 minutes twice per day. But
Transcendental Meditation is a bit different from other types
of meditation. As opposed to clearing your thoughts, Transcendental
Meditation focuses on channeling your mind on a single mantra that is
repeated over and over. For me, this has the effect of encouraging
relaxation while sharpening my focus.
Transcendental Meditation is so popular that it's even been taught at schools across the country. Chances are, you may be able to find a seven-step Transcendental Meditation course in or near your hometown.
I can think of no other person better suited to practicing Transcendental Meditation than the busy entrepreneur. Here are just a few more ways that Transcendental Meditation has improved my hectic entrepreneurial life.
Putting Goals Into Perspective
As someone obsessed with time management
and goal setting, Transcendental Meditation has allowed me to put my
goals into focus and reevaluate what's truly important in life. In a
sense, my goals have become in tune with my mantra, placing them at the
forefront of my life.
What Transcendental Meditation has helped me decipher is the
"why" or the primary motivation for achieving these goals. By analyzing
these motivating factors, it actually motivates me to further put all of
the resources I have available toward accomplishing these goals while
cutting away the fat or waste (also known as stress) in my life.
It almost seems ironic that somebody obsessed with time
management would take the time out of their busy schedule to meditate.
But what I gain from Transcendental Meditation significantly improves my
focus and mental clarity, helps me achieve other tasks throughout the
week and makes me happier and more confident.
Uplifting My Mood And Mental State
As an entrepreneur, you often need to be a people person, whether it’s around your employees or your customers. Most
of us are familiar with the stress associated with being an
entrepreneur, so I don't need to discuss it, but it can have significant
effects on your mental and physical health unless you can find ways to
reduce it.
With Transcendental Meditation, I’ve been able to deal
with stress by putting long-term goals into perspective and also
practicing ways to simply cope with stress. Instead of simply dwelling
on problems, Transcendental Meditation has taught me to deal with them and seek out solutions.
As a bonus, I've found that a positive mood in the workplace
can be contagious and inspire those around you to work harder for and
with you.
Improving Brain Function
As driven people, many entrepreneurs find that it’s rather easy
to get trapped in an unhealthy lifestyle, whether it’s working in a
sedentary environment or picking up bad habits.
Research
has shown that meditation may influence the body and brain functions of
people who practice it and help "establish a body and mind harmony."
It's also been found that meditation may increase melatonin levels and
improve quality of sleep.
As an entrepreneur, I've found that the effects of a good
night’s sleep can be significant in terms of workflow. But even the act
of establishing greater harmony between my mind and body really relaxes
me throughout the day and leaves me not only with more energy but also
with more enthusiasm to accomplish my goals.
Improving Creativity And Problem-Solving Abilities
Transcendental Meditation has helped me see my life from a
different perspective. It has enabled me to provide a different take on
subject matters and experience new ideas that I've never had before.
While it's hard to quantify creativity, generally meditation has been found to improve problem-solving skills
among people who practice it. As entrepreneurs, we're responsible for
putting out fires at our businesses every day. Having the cognitive
tools at your disposal to act quickly can go a long way toward improving
the longevity of your business.
Transcendental Meditation also focuses on visualization, which
I've found can help spur greater creativity and imagination in my
day-to-day life.
Conclusion
I believe that meditation can have inexorable effects on your
creative output and even on establishing greater harmony with those
around you, as well as your inner self. While I've found Transcendental
Meditation works best for me when it comes to sharpening my focus, I
believe that all forms of meditation can be useful, and I
think most of us have about 10 to 20 minutes twice a day to practice it.
I think you’ll notice the benefits almost immediately.
